Inner and Outer Transformation

We are incredibly fortunate to be alive in this moment. Yet, this privilege is also a challenge. As we become aware of the inequities and suffering around the globe, many of us are called to create a more peaceful and sustainable world — the kind of world we want to live in. But where do we begin?

Metta Journeys offers a beginning. Our journeys support you in aligning your deeper intentions with action in the world so that you may live a more purposeful, fulfilling life while empowering others to do the same.

At Metta Journeys, we recognize the direct link between our own inner development and change in the outer world. When we are scattered and depleted, our higher ideals can get lost amongst the demands of daily life, our resources misdirected and our hearts left feeling empty. Metta Journeys provides an opportunity to replenish your inner resources through the practices of yoga and mindfulness while having a positive impact on the world around you.

Yoga and Mindfulness

Yoga is a practice that invites us to live in our bodies in a healthy and refreshing way while learning to pay attention to and improve our mental life as well. By stringing together sequences of postures that are sometimes active and other times receptive, we are given opportunities to fully inhabit our bodies and minds, stimulating a necessary rejuvenation of our natural vitality. A skillful yoga practice encourages balance within our individual system. When we are more in balance, we can better support others in authentic and wholesome ways.

Mindfulness is a practice of meditation that strengthens the minds ability to be both alert and relaxed in a myriad of circumstances, while diminishing OUR negative habits of reactivity and distraction. Each retreat will offer not only group classes tailored to your level, but also allow for a private session with a yoga teacher to better address personal needs and concerns in a one on one setting.

The Journeys

Each trip will provide individual care from the moment you connect with our travel coordinator, who will not only help you with all your travel plans, but will also be on site helping each person with their needs along the way. Each journey will also provide at least two highly trained and dedicated yoga teachers who will offer twice-daily classes for those new to yoga, and for those already enjoying a regular practice. Classes will include details about posture alignment, breath awareness and appropriate sequencing in a supportive and inspiring style that leads you toward a more contemplative mood for meditation.

Our daily outings will include interactions with the ground staff (locally based) from the organization we are collaborating with, as well as time spent with individual women/children being supported by that organization.

With Women for Women International in Rwanda, we will have the inspiring opportunity to connect with and sponsor one local woman just beginning the program, and see other women graduate who have just completed their year, offering stories and insights about their changes. Those who would like to come back the following year to see their ‘sister’ graduate will have this option as well.

We will also provide jeeps that will take groups of four to meet graduates of the WFWI program in their homes and businesses and make meaningful connections with the help of translators.

During each trip we will visit the local sites of interest and surrounding areas between the two daily yoga sessions offering a multilayered experience of involved outreach and adventure travel in a yoga retreat setting.
