Yoga

We include yoga on many of our trips as a way of becoming more engaged with our surroundings, processing any emotions that arise, connecting with each other as human beings, and cultivating a sense of metta or "goodwill". The physical practice of yoga helps us to stay rejuvenated and supple, which is especially important when we find ourselves on long plane rides and traveling in countries where the local living conditions are different than what we are used to. We also believe that practicing yoga opens us up to a deeper awareness of ourselves and gives us better clarity of mind.
Chandra and Sarah were fabulous instructors. They were a perfect combination: skillful, patient, and compassionate.

Our Yoga Classes
Our yoga classes include basic instruction in both active and receptive yoga postures, conscious breathing, and simple meditation. Our seasoned yoga teachers will share how these ancient practices apply to our contemporary lives and how you can begin to integrate them in practical ways upon your return home. If you are new to yoga, this will be an opportunity to learn the foundations of a healthy yoga practice to support you in living a more balanced, conscious, and fulfilling life. If you are already familiar with or devoted to yoga, you will have the opportunity to deepen your practice. Because the group is kept to a maximum of 20, our experienced yoga teachers will be able to give personal attention to all students.
The yoga was vital to the trip. It really made my heart sing.
— Linda K., Evanston IL, USA, Rwanda 2008
Why We Include Yoga
Yoga teaches us how to live a healthy, present, and peaceful life. Yoga started in India more than 2000 years ago, and is practiced today by millions of people worldwide. It is a physical practice that consists of stretching, strengthening, and balancing poses to keep the body healthy; it is also a mental and emotional discipline in which we practice awareness and compassion. Yoga has been proven to have positive effects on the health of our digestive, circulatory, and cardiovascular systems, as well as on our joints, bones, and muscles. In addition, the yogic practices of controlled breathing (pranayama) and meditation help us to be more open, attentive, and at peace in our lives.
The daily yoga and meditation was very important for me. It was the icing on the cake.
